AlfaPeople is made up of a diverse collection of individuals who have come together to achieve a single mission – to enable growth and provide unique, competitive business processes supported by flexible and capable Microsoft Dynamics solutions and industry add-ons with additional enhancements. We want to highlight the people behind the scenes with our Employee Spotlight blog series, during which we will sit down with employees to hear a little bit about the people who make the AlfaPeople culture so distinctive. This week, we talked to Erik Hoiden, Managing Partner at AlfaPeople USA.
With +25 years in the enterprise business solutions space, Erik has a proven track record of advising Midsize and Enterprise companies through successful implementations. His strong focus on Retail for the last 10 years has led to Erik being recognized as a respected leader in Dynamics Retail solutions and a trusted advisor to many retailers.
“When customers look for a new retail system, they aren’t overly concerned about products and version names. Quite simply, they are looking to solve business problems with a complete, proven and reliable solution. We offer advice on how to best support their business processes and what to prepare for in the future. Once we make sure that we understand the complete picture, we can suggest the software solution that can take the retailer to the next level.
Understanding the retailer’s business and translating that into efficient solutions – this is the AlfaPeople trademark.”
Erik’s ability to understand business before technology is a key component of his success. With a determined focus on the overall strategy and solving process issues before diving into solutions, Erik has advised many retailers to a positive return on investment on their business software projects. Retailers such as Tommy Hilfiger, CHANEL, Cole’s Liquor, Soriana, Tempur Pedic, Paul Mitchell and many more have benefited from working with Erik.
Erik’s focus and high level of dedication to the retail industry as well as his deep knowledge of the market have made it possible to attract the top talent that makes up AlfaPeople Inc., a company which is 100% focused on Microsoft-based retail solutions. AlfaPeople offer retailers a team of the most highly experienced retail and solutions experts. 1. How did your career start?
My career started in the mid 80’s with the first versions of AX, called DanMax and Concorde.
A friend and I started a small company importing PC’s from Taiwan and selling them in Denmark. With my business background, I got involved in ERP and quickly found out that is where my passion was – not in hardware. I continued as an independent consultant for several years, until I started working for Michael Gaardboes’ old company, Columbus IT, in 1994. I have worked with him ever since.
2. How long have you been working for AlfaPeople?
We started AlfaPeople US in 2011 with a clear focus on Retail, along with a group of very skilled people with the ability to go after retail deals. Within the first 2 years, AlfaPeople was named the retail partner of the year and had the opportunity to sell POS systems to Walmart.
3. What is your position here at AlfaPeople and what do you do?
I am the Managing Partner for AlfaPeople US and as such, manage the company. This includes multiple conversations a day with management and internal team members. Constant interaction is key, as we all are working remote most of the time. With that, I try to be brief and precise, so we all stay efficient.
4. What is your typical day like?
Usually I spend the first hour of the day reading emails and checking the news. When I get to the office, I check my calendar which is usually booked with meetings, calls, and internal work. Sometimes I need to prioritize and shift things around. I try to have a mix of tasks that are and are not time sensitive. I am strict with booking my week in advance, as I believe structure is important. This keeps me from falling for the temptation of spending too much time on one task.
5. How does working at AlfaPeople challenge and encourage you to do your best work?
I have been a team member for many years in many different roles. Being responsible for the business is a daily challenge. My team and I get to tackle business problems, customer relations and organizational tasks. To me, the biggest challenge is getting the organization to work as a team while valuing each other’s skills and efforts. Collaborating as a team is the only way we can be successful.
6. What’s your favorite part about your job?
Winning deals and celebrating success in delivery with the rest of the team would have to be my favorite. It is very gratifying to see people we hired grow in their role and take on more responsibilities. To me, being successful at what you do is the greatest accomplishment and the most gratifying part.
7. What is the best advice that somebody else has given you?
I worked in Presales on AX for 15 years and knowing that you can end up in unexpected situations has taught me to prepare for much more than is needed. Being knowledgeable about what you do makes you more secure and relaxed. There will always be situations that you may not be prepared for, but the more you can anticipate the better you can handle these situations.
8. What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
Life has taught me to see the positive in a situation and try to find solutions, while still preparing for the worst.
